Best Regions in Spain — May 2026
Andalusia 🌿
Seville, Granada, Córdoba. May is Andalusia's sweet spot. Temperatures 22-28°C — warm enough for terraces, not yet the 40°C furnace of July. The Feria de Córdoba (May 23-30) fills the city with flamenco, horses, and casetas. Book Córdoba accommodation now if visiting that week.
Book ahead: Alhambra (Granada) — tickets sell out 2-4 weeks in advance. Book at official site.
Barcelona & Catalonia 🏙️
Barcelona, Girona, Costa Brava. May temperatures 18-24°C. Beach weather is starting but not peak. The city is lively without the August crush. The Primavera Sound festival (May 28-31) draws music fans — if that's not your scene, avoid Parc del Fòrum area those dates.
Book ahead: Sagrada Familia (3-5 days), Park Güell (same week). Picasso Museum is easier — often same-day.
Northern Spain — Basque Country & Galicia 🌧️
San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela. Cooler (16-22°C) with occasional rain — but this is the green Spain at its most beautiful. Pintxos in San Sebastián, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and the Camino de Santiago seeing steady pilgrim traffic. Less crowded than the south.
Book ahead: Popular pintxos tours in San Sebastián sell out 1-2 weeks ahead. Guggenheim tickets are usually same-day.
Balearic Islands 🏝️
Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza. May is the secret season. Warm enough for swimming (water 18-20°C), hotels at pre-summer rates, and beaches uncrowded. Mallorca's almond blossoms are done but the island is green and the hiking is excellent. Ibiza's club season hasn't started — it's peaceful.
Book ahead: Ferry tickets between islands. Popular agroturismo (farm-stay) hotels fill for weekends.

What to Watch Out For — May 2026
⚠️ Feria de Córdoba (May 23-30)
Córdoba becomes extremely busy. Accommodation prices 2-3x normal. If you're not attending the feria, visit before May 22 or after May 31. If you ARE attending: book everything now.
⚠️ Labour Day (May 1)
National holiday. Many attractions, shops, and restaurants operate reduced hours or close. Public transport runs Sunday schedules. Plan a relaxed day — parks, walking, outdoor dining.
⚠️ Primavera Sound (Barcelona, May 28-31)
Major international music festival at Parc del Fòrum. The Diagonal Mar/Poblenou area is festival central. If you're not attending, book accommodation away from this zone.
⚠️ Heat Awareness
Southern Spain can reach 30°C+ in late May. Carry water. Siesta hours (14:00-17:00) exist for a reason — plan indoor activities or rest during peak heat. Northern Spain and higher elevations remain comfortable.
Responsible Travel in Spain — May 2026
Spain welcomed 94 million visitors in 2024. Overtourism pressure is real in Barcelona, Mallorca, San Sebastián, and parts of Andalusia. Travel responsibly:
- Spread out. If visiting Barcelona, add Girona or Tarragona. If Mallorca, explore the interior towns, not just the coast.
- Respect neighborhoods. In Barcelona's Gràcia and Seville's Santa Cruz, residents live there. Keep noise down at night. Don't block doorways for photos.
- Water awareness. Southern Spain faces recurring drought. Short showers. Reuse towels. Don't waste water.
- Eat local, independently. Skip international chains. The family-run bar does better food and keeps money in the community.
- Book directly where possible. Hotels and tour operators keep more revenue when you book direct vs. OTAs.
- Learn five words of Spanish. "Buenos días" (good morning), "gracias" (thank you), "por favor" (please), "la cuenta" (the bill), "dónde está…" (where is…). It changes every interaction.
